MURDER squad detectives last night charged two men with murder after a killing in Marsden.

Police also charged the pair with attempted murder after a terrifying incident in the village.

The accused men were named as Anthony David Driver, 36, and Luke Elliott, 21.

The charges come after a 19-year-old man was stabbed to death in the Colne Valley village – and a second teenager was left seriously ill in hospital.

Police sealed off several streets near Old Mount Road, Mount Road and Town Gate after the double stabbing in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The 19-year-old victim has been named as Craig Hepburn from Linwood, near Glasgow.

The surviving teenager, Conor Paton, was conscious after the attack but underwent emergency surgery yesterday at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary.

It is believed the teens were visiting Craig’s uncle, Scott Hepburn in Marsden, and had only been in the village for hours before the tragedy unfolded.

Residents told how the group had been enjoying an evening at The Wine Bar in Peel Street where Craig had entertained drinkers by playing the bagpipes and there was not a hint of trouble.

But on their way home, after Craig’s uncle had left, the teens were attacked and knifed by at least two men in the Old Mount area of the village.

Det Supt Paul Taylor of West Yorkshire Police Homicide and Major Enquiry Team told the Examiner: “They’ve been visiting relatives in Marden and had been entertaining the locals with bagpipes that evening.

“They have later become involved in this incident which has ended in tragedy.”

He told the Examiner the weapon used in the attack had not yet been recovered.

He added: “I am keen to speak to anyone who witnessed these assaults.

“Were you out and about in Marsden late Friday night or early Saturday morning and saw what happened? If so I need to speak to you urgently.

“Marsden is a close-knit community and if anyone hears any rumours about what has happened then I would ask them to get in touch.”

He said he had been out in Marsden yesterday and a number of people had since come forward with information.

He continued: “We’ve got a few people telling us things.

“Lots of people approached us.

“We have carried out forensics at the scene but it will take a few days for the results to come back.”

He confirmed the 36-year-old and a 21-year-old, both thought to be from Marsden, had been arrested in connection with the attack on Saturday.

They are both expected to appear before magistrates in Huddersfield later today.

Residents told how they awoke to hear the West Yorkshire Police helicopter hovering over the village as officers on the ground, in police video vans and squad cars flooded the scene.

Manchester Road was closed at the junction with Folly Road until around 10.30am on Saturday.

The entrance to St Bartholomew’s Church and graveyard and Clough Lee and Towngate were also cordoned off with the junction at Manchester Road.

A strong police presence remained until around midday on Saturday and yesterday police continued to guard a property in Mount Road.

Forensic teams could be seen on Saturday afternoon carrying out checks in the village.

Resident Nancy Clegg told the Examiner: “I heard voices outside about 1pm. I just thought it was nothing.

Neighbour Jake Smith, 22, was forced to stay with his sister-in-law after police cordoned off Old Mount Road where he lives.

He said: “I left the village to go home around 1.30pm and there were police everywhere.

“I told them I lived on Wood Top but there they said I couldn’t go through so I went to stay with my sister-in-law.

“I’ve been told two Scottish guys were stabbed.”

Resident Anne Lunn lives near the victim’s uncle in Wood Top.

She said: “We try and look out for each other as its that kind of place.

“They had only been here a few hours. They arrived at tea time and went out for the evening.

“I have only known him have visitors from Scotland once before when there was football on at Manchester.

“They are really good people.”

A 76-year-old resident in Mount Road told how he awoke to find dozens of police in the early hours.

He said: “I couldn’t believe my eyes. “There were police everywhere.

“They then arrested people and brought them out in a line.

“I thought it was a bit odd.

“Then a man and a woman were put into separate unmarked police cars.”
