A new youth club is to be set up in Marsden.
Called Marsden Youth Group, it hopes to provide activities and trips for young people under 16, who has been without such a dedicated village-wide club for several years.
And now interested participants and volunteers are being asked to come forward to ensure that the project is a roaring success.
Seventeen-year-old John Shone is one of those behind the new group, which is a re-branding of another, smaller group that he set up five years ago.
John, who lives on Woods Terrace and attends New College in Huddersfield, said: “I originally set up a youth group for people who lived on the Woods and Carrs estates five years ago, because I wanted to regenerate the park that had fallen into a bad condition.
“We had a group of 10 people and between us managed to raise £100,000 between us through grants and fundraising over three years.
“Last year we took some time off but are now re-launching the group and making it open to all young people from across Marsden.”
John has big plans for the group, which he hopes will become a hub for young people outside of school and will also enable them to take up projects between themselves that will make benefit the community.
John said: “We have lots of exciting ideas.
“Projects-wise, I think it would be great if through the group we could start by creating some welcome to Marsden signs, which we could create using young people’s art designs and think of others which will help make Marsden a better place.
“On top of this, we want to start putting on regular activities, such as bushcraft sessions and trips out for members to places like Blackpool.
“I want to give the younger kids something to do and an opportunity to make friends from other parts of the village and give people under 18 the opportunity to volunteer with us and gain some good leadership skills and help fundraise for the group so we can put on the activities, all of which will look good on their CVs.
“My hope is that everyone in Marsden will get involved.”
The next meeting of Marsden Youth Group will take place on May 11 at 5.30pm at the park on Woods Terrace.
