TIME is running out for supporters of a Huddersfield charity to sign a petition calling for headstones to be VAT-free.

More than 220 people have so far signed the petition on the 10 Downing Street website demanding the tax be removed from the supply and erection of memorial headstones.

Under current legislation funerals, cremations, burials and other related costs that are deemed essential are exempt from VAT.

But the standard 17.5% tax still has to be paid on headstones and other memorial items viewed as non-essential.

The trust was set up by Marsh couple Rachael and Neil Salmon after they lost their three-year-old son, Joseph, to pneumonia in 2005. They help parents who lose children cover the costs of the funeral and other expenses.

The petition can be signed until April 6. Visit http://petitions.number10.ov.uk/HEADSTONEVAT
