A QUARRY is seeking an extension to planning approval it was given in 2009.

Marshalls Mono Ltd already haspermission to recover blockstone, pipeclay and aggregate from Appleton Quarry, off Holmfirth Road, Shepley.

But work is yet to begin and the prior approval lapses after three years, so the firm now needs further permission from the Kirklees planning committee to carry out the work.

Councillors will consider the application at 1pm today at Dewsbury Town Hall.

The council’s planning report says that Marshalls Mono was given permission to extend the existing quarry west of its current work to extract sandstone for masonry stone and aggregate production and shale for use in pipe and brick manufacture.

It would involve excavating an area measuring 150m x 120m down to depths of 50m below existing ground levels.

At the time of the original planning application, Marshalls Mono intended to work on the existing quarry and the extension in tandem.

But planning conditions meant it was not able to enter the extension area until a significant proportion of the existing quarry had been restored.

As that’s not been fully done the firm has been unable to work on the extension to the quarry.

Marshalls wants to carry out quarrying over a further three years.

If it is approved the firms estimates the extension would provide reserves which would last six years for blockstone production and five years for aggregate at the predicted rate of extraction.

One letter of objection was submitted to the proposal.
