Masked thugs armed with baseball bats terrorised a family in a car-jacking attack.

The six men hit one of the victims in their home in Batley before they fled with the keys to an Audi A6.

And in another incident last night, a woman was pushed to the floor by a thief who escaped in her 2014 VW Golf.

Both incidents are now being probed by Kirklees detectives and they fear it shows a worrying rise in violence.

Car thieves usually sneak in to homes to try and steal car keys in what are known as “Hanoi” burglaries.

But Det Insp Ian Thornes, of Kirklees CID, said: “We believe these people are targeting high-value cars and have no regard for the people.

“It may be that car-owners have listened to our security warnings and take more care with their car keys, but these people have shown they will use violence”.

Detective Inspector Ian Thornes

Earlier this week, a 76-year-old woman was attacked in her Batley home by three men who stole jewellery and a Range Rover from the house.

The first attack last night happened about 7.30pm in Thorncliffe Road, Batley, as a 53-year-old man and his children aged 20, 18 and 13 were at home.

The gang of masked men, carrying baseball bats, burst into the house and demanded property.

One of the teenagers was hit with a bat and was later treated at Dewsbury District Hospital for bruising.

Det Insp Thornes said: “They demanded property from the house and also the keys to the grey Audi A6 outside. They drove off in the car with an amount of property.

“That car is still outstanding but we have seized a silver Jaguar in Bradford, which we believe the gang had used”

Five of the men were white and the sixth was Asian.

An hour later, police were called to Ringshaw Drive, Gomersal, where a 23-year-old woman was attacked as she answered the door.

Police said a man asked if her name was “Sam” and if she had puppies for sale.

When she said: “No”, the man knocked her to the floor and stole the keys to a red VW Golf parked outside, driving off in the car.

He was white, aged between 30 and 35, 5ft 5in tall and of medium build with short blond hair and a navy top with the word Crufts across it in white.

Det Insp Thornes urged people with information about any of the raids to contact police via 101.
