MASKED robbers armed with a gun and a knife tried to rob a security guard carrying cash at a fast food restaurant.

On Monday lunchtime two men wearing balaclavas tried to rob the guard as he collected cash from the the KFC at Birstall Business Park in Birstall.

The guard was in a secure office when the two robbers, one armed with a knife, the other with a handgun, forced their way into the room.

They threatened the guard for cash, but fled empty handed after the dye mechanism on a cash box the guard was holding was activated. 

Nobody was harmed during the incident.

The suspects left in a white BMW  driven from the main car park by a third man.

The BMW - which had been stolen from an address in Headingley overnight on Sunday - was later found burnt out on Moorside Walk in Drighlington. 

A handgun was also found in the garden of a property on Moorside Walk.

Police enquiries into the attempted robbery are ongoing and any witnesses, or anyone with information is now asked to contact Dewsbury CID via 101 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
