A SKILLED stonemason has offered to help provide a village with a war memorial.

Fred Evans will carve out the memorial for Birdsedge on stone supplied by Marshalls Quarries, of Shepley.

Villagers are being asked their views on what should appear on the memorial, which will be in the gardens outside the village hall.

The names of 48 people from the district who went to war are inscribed on a plaque in the hall.

Clr Sheila Hey, the area's representative on Kirklees, said: "The feeling was that we wanted a permanent memorial outside, so that people can lay wreaths and flowers, to remember those who gave their services.

"Now we have had these generous offers from Marshalls and Mr Evans we hope a memorial can be in place by the autumn," added Clr Hey.
