A HUDDERSFIELD student is through to the finals of a national design contest.

Matthew Ince (pictured), a second year BA/BSc (Hons) product design student from the University of Huddersfield, fought off tough opposition to become a finalist in the plastics design competition, sponsored by international materials company Bayer Material Science.

A total of 72 students entered and the panel of judges whittled these down to just six finalists.

Students were encouraged to design a product suitable for mass production in plastics that clearly demonstrates creativity and value for money in a refreshing way.

Matthew designed a pincer-shaped aid for safely lifting and carrying heavy building blocks on construction sites.

The product would help deal with this occupational hazard and prevent builders damaging their backs.

Matthew, plus the five other finalists, will find out who wins on June 25 in London.
