MAX the police dog has a new bow to his collar – being the best in the county.

And PC Mark Muscarella has been named as West Yorkshire Police’s Dog Handler of the Year.

The officer and his dog Max, a German Shepherd, were praised for their work in catching criminals.

PC Muscarella, of Calderdale Police, said: “They say every dog has its day and today certainly belongs to Max.

“All of the recognition should go to him.”

Over the last 12 months Mark and Max have made a number of significant arrests.

In October 2008 they were first on the scene when a man armed with a knife shut himself in the kitchen of his house.

The pair’s teamwork has also led to two prolific burglars being charged after they caught them and recovered stolen property that linked them to eight burglaries across Calderdale.

Inspector Lorna Meredith of the Dog Section said: “They are a credit to the section and to the Force.”
