FITNESS fans can now work out in the fresh air.

The first outdoor gym in Yorkshire was opened by Kirklees Mayor Clr Jean Calvert at Crow Nest Park in Dewsbury on Monday.

It includes nine pieces of exercise equipment and is available to anyone.

Each piece of equipment provides information about which muscle groups they exercise.

The new £30,000 development was paid for by Kirklees Council’s Dewsbury Area Committee.

Chairman Clr Eric Firth said: “Not everyone can afford to join a gym so I think this is a wonderful idea.

“The beauty is that it’s open to everyone.”

The outdoor gym, the first of its kind in Yorkshire, will be available all-year round.

Clr Firth said: “In the spring and summer lots and lots of people will enjoy this facility.”

The Dewsbury East Labour councillor hopes other area committees in Kirklees will fund similar schemes in their areas.

The equipment, which was supplied by the Great Outdoor Gym Company, is known as the Steve Backley Legacy Gym.

It is named after the three-time Olympic javelin medallist, who recently took part in ITV’s Dancing on Ice.
