KIRKLEES men can now look smart and support two local good causes - by wearing a new charity tie.

Mayor of Kirklees Clr Margaret Fearnley has created a special tie which will be sold to raise cash for the two charities she has chosen to support during her year of office - the Laura Crane Trust and Kirkwood Hospice.

The tie is in the Kirklees Council colours - blue, green, magenta and pale green.

It bears the council's civic logo, plus the words Mayor's Charity 2005.

Sally Greenwood, from the Mayor's office, said: "It's a really novel idea. It's the first time something like this has been done."

The ties will be on sale for £10 at tourist information offices around Kirklees from next week.

All proceeds will go to the Mayor's charities.

The Laura Crane Trust, based at Northumberland Street in Huddersfield, funds research into cancers affecting 13 to 25-year-olds and supports young cancer patients.

Kirkwood Hospice, based at Dalton, provides free care for people with serious illnesses.

It costs around £3m a year to run and only 20% of this cost is covered by the NHS.
