DELEGATES from around the world took a measured look at industry during a major conference in Huddersfield.

The latest developments in high-tech measuring equipment came under the spotlight at the four-day event at the university.

The sixth Lamdamap conference - they are held once every two years - was hosted by the university's department of computing and engineering and organised by Prof Derek Ford.

Dean Edwards and Graeme Gibbons, of Hertfordshire-based Lambda Photometrics, demonstrated the company's laser measuring equipment.

The conference was attended by specialists in machine tool performance, calibration and international standards.

Speakers included senior figures from engineering company Rolls Royce and electronics group Renishaw, as well as academics from universities in Liverpool, Nottingham, Southampton and Zwickau in Germany.

The conference also featured technical workshops and tutorials, covering topics such as new developments in equipment to measure the accuracy of machine tools.

Prof Ford said more than 150 delegates a day attended the conference.

He said: "This is the second time Huddersfield has hosted the conference. The previous time was in 1997, when the conference achieved its highest-ever attendance figures."

Prof Ford added: "All our visitors appreciated the venue, the high technical standards achieved and the cordial environment for presenting papers."
