ALL eyes will be on one man at the Galpharm Stadium on June 3 - Elton John.

But what the crowds won't see are the people who will have been working behind the scenes to bring the superstar to Huddersfield.

On the big day, more than 200 people will be working at the event - which is expected to attract around 20,000 people.

For months, a core team of 30 has been working to make it a success.

Jayne Lee, events manager at Kirklees Stadium Development Ltd (KSDL), co-ordinates this work and she said: "It is very much a team effort."

Preparations for the concert started last November when promoter Marshall Arts contacted the stadium team.

However, it was mid-December before Marshall Arts confirmed it would be Elton John who was performing at the concert.

By then, KSDL staff were busy sorting out entertainment licences, safety certificates and liaising with caterers about hospitality arrangements for the event.

They have also had to arrange medical cover for the event, approve promotional materials and create ticket designs and prices.

Arrangements are currently being made for car parking and for stewarding the event.

Special supervisors are being sought to look after fire alarms and high voltage equipment on the day, and contingency plans for all kinds of emergencies are being drafted.

Lighting requirements for the stadium are being assessed and decisions are being made on which kinds of pitch cover to use.

The cover - which can cost up to £30,000 for one day - is vital to protect the stadium's pitch, which will be used for a rugby match two days after the concert.

As well as looking after the audience, Jayne Lee and her staff also need to make arrangement for the stars of the show.

Elton John and Lulu - who was confirmed as support act on April 6 - will both pass lists of their requirements to Jayne and her staff.

Usually, the stars are housed in a backstage area. This is in the Panasonic Stand and behind the John Smith Stand, which will contain the stage.

However, Elton John's vast clothing collection has made things more complex.

Jayne said: "Usually the bedrooms in the Panasonic stand are used as dressing rooms.

"But this was not big enough for Elton John. Apparently he brings lots of clothes! So we found another room.

"The promoters will sort out personal needs. They will present us with a list and we will provide whatever he and Lulu want."

Jayne said a successful event was all about communication.

"We are constantly in talks with the promoter. They drive the event and we are constantly reacting to them," she added.

"Communication is vital for an event such as this and, so far, we've been successful in staging concerts at the stadium.

"It is a big test and it costs a huge amount of money to stage something like this.

"People's perception is that pop concerts are a money-making thing but it really is not true. The stadium company makes very little money out of the concerts.

"We do it to put our name on the map and we like to hold concerts for local people to enjoy."
