PLANS to build a supermarket between Honley and Brockholes will be debated at a public meeting.

Residents are invited to voice their opinions on potential plans to build a supermarket between Woodhead Road and New Mill Road at a meeting at Trinity Church Honley, at Moor Bottom, on August 9.

Last month, councillors refused Tesco’s application to build a supermarket at the former Midlothian Garage site, Wooldale, on the grounds it would create congestion on the surrounding roads.

But in refusing the application councillors recognised the need for a supermarket in Holme Valley.

Later last month Felix Eaton, who owns half of the Hope Bank Works site, between Honley and Brockholes, said he planned to submit plans for a supermarket on the site.

A presentation on the plans was made at Honley Village Hall on July 22.

Upmarket supermarket chains Booth’s and Waitrose as well as Morrisons have been contacted regarding interest in the potential development.

The meeting will be chaired by Holme Valley North councillor Charles Greaves.

Clr Greaves said: “Following the Hope Bank supermarket presentation, comments made at the Tesco planning application and speculation regarding development at Drake’s mill we are organising a public meeting to discuss supermarket developments within the Honley and Brockholes area.

“The purpose of the meeting is to allow a free exchange of ideas and opinions, so that as a community we can identify opportunities, issues and concerns surrounding supermarket developments within our villages and to enable our representatives to address these issues and to gain a clearer understanding of people’s views.”

But while plans for a supermarket in Honley and Brockholes will be discussed the meeting would not be covering the Tesco Midlothian Garage plan or the Meltham Morrisons expansion plan, Clr Greaves said.
