RESIDENTS, councillors and bus company representatives will discuss controversial changes to the 313 route at New Mill Working Men’s Club from 8.15pm tonight.

Operators First Bus plan to re-route the hourly service between Huddersfield and Hepworth by October 28, so it bypasses New Mill and Jackson Bridge.

First Bus says passenger figures between the villages on Sheffield Road are very low and the profitability of the service is poor.

But residents, who have already gathered hundreds of signatures on a petition, say the move will leave them stranded.

John Brook, who will chair tonight’s meeting, said: “At last Wednesday’s meeting we were expecting maybe 20 people, but hundreds came.

“It was the first gauge of public opinion First Bus probably had and I think they were quite surprised by public feeling. First Bus say they are going to change the route but we’d like them to reconsider.”
