It was non-stop fun and entertainment in Meltham at the weekend as the village buzzed with more than 1,000 people ahead of the Christmas lights switch on.

The day began sedately enough with a coffee morning at St Bartholemew’s Church and a Christmas market all day in the Jubilee Room of the Carlile Institute complete with Father Christmas perched upstairs in the club room.

This was followed by a Santa Dash and Elf Stomp from outside Cafe 33 at 2pm which attracted between 30 and 40 children and adults who ran down to Meltham Green and back.

Meltham’s mayor and Kirklees councillor Edgar Holroyd-Doveton said: “The village was swarming with people.

“At 4pm there was a combined choir of the three schools in Meltham singing in St Bartholmew’s which was very special and then the winner of a poster competition Summer Farnell joined me to switch on the Christmas lights.”

Later there was a family disco in Meltham church hall featuring the finals of Meltham’s Got Talent.

Clr Holroyd-Doveton added: “The town was buzzing all day and the event was a great success for all the community.”
