A MAN has appeared in court charged in connection with a fatal car crash.

Gary Pedelty, 24, was killed when his Mazda 323 was hit head-on by a Peugeot 206 on Huddersfield Road, between Netherton and Meltham last November.

The Peugeot driver, Richard Mail, appeared in Huddersfield Magistrates’ Court yesterday accused of driving without due care and attention and driving while over the alcohol limit.

The 37-year-old from Copley Avenue in Meltham was sent for trial at Bradford Crown Court on June 1.

Seven members of Mr Pedelty’s family were in court yesterday along with seven of Mail’s relatives.

Two uniformed police officers stood guard during the five-minute proceeding in Court 1 at 2pm yesterday.

Mr Pedelty, who was 6ft 8in tall, played for Meltham All Blacks amateur rugby league side alongside his brother Jason.

The former Honley High School pupil served in the 3rd Yorkshire Regiment and did a tour of Iraq.

He worked with his father Kevin Pedelty at Illingworth and Gregory as a plasterer.
