A house builder is seeking consent for up to 100 new homes in Meltham.

Barratt Homes wants to build a new development off Helme Lane.

The 8.11 acre site is currently open grassland and agricultural fields, and bounded by woodland, open fields, the cricket ground and recreational ground.

At the lower end of the site is the sports complex which is home to Meltham Cricket club, local bowling teams and Meltham Football Club.

There are also play facilities for children and the housebuilder has pledged to spend money on improving them.

In the planning statement to Kirklees Council, Barratt say: “The proposed scheme seeks to provide new quality family housing in a sustainable location which is appropriate for the proposed residential use.

“As the site is located adjacent to existing sport and recreation facilities the development proposals will seek to deliver a financial contribution towards the improvement of existing facilities in the area, rather than on site, in order to deliver benefits to the wider community.”

Barratt claim their plans will generate £1.6m each year of spending power to the local retail and leisure economy.

The developer has already asked for some residents’ views, with feedback including house design not appropriate tot he area, development too close to the conservation area and that it should not exceed two-storeys high.

Barratt is seeking outline consent for detached, semi-detached, terraced and bungalows for the site and the planning application is open to public consultation at Kirklees Council until April 4.
