A MAN accused of causing death by careless driving will stand trial.

Richard Mail, of Copley Avenue, Meltham, made a brief appearance at court yesterday.

He appeared before Judge Jonathan Rose at Bradford Crown Court yesterday accused of causing death by careless driving whilst under the influence of alcohol.

The charge relates to a head-on collision which resulted in the death of 24-year-old Gary Pedelty.

Mr Pedelty, of Meltham, was driving his Mazda 323 when it was struck by a Peugeot 206 allegedly being driven by Mail on Huddersfield Road, between Netherton and Meltham last November.

Mr Pedelty, a former Honley High School pupil, was a former soldier.

He had served in the 3rd Yorkshire Regiment and had seen action in a gruelling tour of Iraq.

He was also a well-respected sportsman and a member of Meltham All Blacks amateur rugby league side alongside his brother Jason.

He worked with his father Kevin Pedelty at Illingworth and Gregory as a plasterer.

Mail was granted bail after a brief hearing.

The case has been listed for a two-day trial at Bradford Crown Court on December 13.
