A RUGBY player, who was killed in road accident, is to be honoured in a memorial match this weekend.

Gary Pedelty, 24, died in a head-on crash on Huddersfield Road, between Meltham and Netherton, in November.

Mr Pedelty’s former team, Meltham All Blacks, will hold a memorial game versus Hanging Heaton in his memory at Broadlands Rec, Meltham, on Saturday.

The former Honley High School pupil had served in the 3rd Yorkshire Regiment and had seen action in a gruelling tour of Iraq. Gary, 6ft 8in, had also toured Australia, playing Rugby League with the Army.

He worked with his father Kevin Pedelty at Illingworth and Gregory as a plasterer.

The match, organised by Gary’s family, will be an annual friendly pre-season fixture with a trophy for the winning team.

Mr Pedelty’s mother Aletia, 43, said: “We just don’t want people to forget him.

“Gary’s grandma and grandad approached us with the idea so it’s been organised by the family.”

Mrs Pedelty said her son’s death had been tough to deal with.

She said: “It’s a case of focusing on something else.”

l Richard Mail, of Copley Avenue, Meltham, has been charged with drink driving and careless driving in relation to the crash which killed Mr Pedelty.

Mail is set to appear for trial at Bradford Crown Court on December 12.
