A Holmfirth man has appeared in court accused of causing the death of cyclist John Radford.

Michael Gledhill, of Bramble Bank, was before Kirklees Magistrates’ Court.

The court heard that the 23-year-old was charged on Wednesday with causing the death of Mr Radford by dangerous driving.

The cycling champion was left brain damaged after being allegedly hit by a car on Huddersfield Road between New Mill and Brockholes on July 31 2013.

Mr Radford died from his injuries in November last year.

The 70-year-old from Meltham was chairman of Huddersfield Cyclists Touring Club.

After sufferiing the injuries, he was in a persistent vegetative state.

A post-mortem after his death on November 5 indicated that the death was not down to natural causes but linked with the earlier incident.

Gledhill did not enter a plea at the brief hearing.

Magistrates sent his case to Leeds Crown Court.

He will first appear there on January 22 and was granted unconditional bail.
