THE education secretary came under fresh pressure last night after mistakes were uncovered in his list of schools in Kirklees facing cuts.
Michael Gove announced on Monday that the multi-billion pound Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme would be scrapped, meaning hundreds of schools across the country will lose out on major renovations.
But he was forced to apologise yesterday after it emerged there were more than 20 mistakes in his list of which schools would be rebuilt and which would not.
And Kirklees Council’s schools chief Clr Ken Smith said last night that Mr Gove had made two errors in his list for this area.
The list of schools where building plans are classed as “stopped” includes RM Grylls in Liversedge – which closed in August, 2008.
The other mistake concerns Netherhall Studio School, a proposed £4m development at Rawthorpe for 300 young people aged 14 to 19.
The Department of Education includes the school on its list as “academy – for discussion” despite the fact that Netherhall Studio School is not planned to be an academy and is not part of BSF.
Clr Smith said: “Even in our own small list in Kirklees there are two obvious mistakes, which suggests that his national list is littered with errors.
“I can only think this is a sign of a rampaging government acting before thinking.
“They talk about local decisions but send down decisions from London in complete ignorance of our local situation. This is a government in an incompetent spiral.”
The decision to end BSF will affect every high school in north Kirklees, where a £200m blueprint had been developed. However a separate £200m plan for Huddersfield and the Valleys was never announced.
Council leader Clr Mehboob Khan criticised Mr Gove yesterday.
The Labour man said: “I wrote to Mr Gove setting out the strong reasons for BSF funding in Kirklees to be protected and I am very disappointed by this announcement.”
According to the Department of Education, the ending of BSF will affect the following schools in Kirklees:
