HUDDERSFIELD training and development manager Sharon Whitehead has taken on an unexpected role.

She has signed up as an adult helper with the Army Cadets - with no previous military experience.

Sharon, who works for Halifax Royal Bank of Scotland's Huddersfield office, was one of 12 adults from all walks of life who put themselves forward for tests at Strensall Camp in York.

"I saw an advert to become an adult instructor and thought it was a great opportunity to help make a difference in our young local teenagers' lives," said Sharon.

She said it had been an action-packed weekend of lectures, presentations, some physical training and practical problem-solving exercises, plus the final interview

Sharon, a member of Huddersfield Light Operatic Society, was part of a team asked to get across an obstacle with a delicate instrument in seven minutes.

Once trained, she will help youngsters with activities such as first aid, learning how to use a map and compass, and the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme.

Anyone interested in helping the Army Cadets can telephone 01484 514 147 on Tuesday or Thursday evenings.
