A 49-year-old man who assaulted a PC has been fined by a court.

Jonathan Fairbank, of Wilson Gardens, Milnsbridge, came to the attention of the police near The Commercial pub on New Street on the evening of May 6.

Bill Astin, prosecuting at Kirklees Magistrates’ Court, said: “Two officers arrived and he was taken to the floor kicking out with his feet.”

The defendant pleaded guilty to both charges and his solicitor Zara Begum said her client was not a well man who suffered from various serious mental health issues including a paranoid personality disorder.

She said on the day in question he had had several drinks having not drunk for over a year. He had also changed his medication recently.

Sentencing him, District Judge Nick Hayles said the defendant had not been before the courts for nearly 10 years.

He fined him £25 for the abuse, £50 for the assault and ordered him to pay £150 compensation to the PC.

He was also ordered to pay a £30 victim surcharge and £50 costs deductible from his benefits.
