It's not everyday a famous jockey serves you a pint of ale.

Regulars were delighted at the Pear Tree Inn, Mirfield, today, after horse racing star Frankie Dettori jumped behind the bar during a surprise visit.

The Italian jockey has been good friends with the pub's manager, Peter Murphy, for more than 25 years, and often visits him when he's in the area.

Peter, 73, used to own race horses and met the jockey when before he swapped horse racing for the pub trade.

Peter said: "We've been pals for a long time. The customers loved it, he'd been to Beverley to watch his daughter show jumping so he gave me a call.

"He's a nice lad, he really is a gentleman. He walks in through the door and takes over, it's lovely!"

Pear Tree Inn landlord Alan Ingle said Frankie was happy to pose for pictures with staff and customers.

He said: "He pulled a couple of pints for the regulars and had some dinner.

"He's a very, very pleasant gentleman."

Frankie Dettori has been Champion Jockey three times, and has ridden the winners of more than 500 Group Races during his career.

He is the son of Gianfranco Dettori, a famous Italian jockey.
