CONSUMER rights will be top of the agenda when a Government minister is in West Yorkshire tomorrow.

Consumer minister Gerry Sutcliffe returns to the county to stress the importance of shoppers' rights.

Mr Sutcliffe, who is an MP in Bradford, will be focusing on issues including mass marketing scams and doorstep crime.

But he will also meet the team behind Consumer Direct in Wakefield, the hugely-successful national consumer helpline, run by West Yorkshire's Trading Standards service.

The advisers take over 180,000 calls each year from people in Yorkshire seeking advice on consumer problems.

He will also confirm plans by the service to distribute more advice to minority groups, with leaflets and booklets in Urdu.

Martin Wood, West Yorkshire's chief trading standards officer, said: "We are delighted the minister is taking time to visit us.

"It provides the ideal opportunity for us to share ideas and update him on local issues of national importance."

Clr Tony Brice, of Kirklees Council, is a member of the Trading Standards Committee.

He said: "The minister will be speaking to consumer advisers and listening to calls at Consumer Direct, so he can hear first hand the type of issues that are relevant to today's consumers."
