EDUCATION and skills secretary Charles Clarke visited Huddersfield to find out about teaching in the town.

And he said he was "impressed" by classroom technology at Holmfirth Junior Infant and Nursery School, where he sat in on lessons.

Mr Clarke was invited to the school 18 months ago by headteacher David Nurgett to open its new information communication technology suite and library. He was unable to attend, so earmarked the school for a visit now.

He was able to view how the school uses high-tech interactive white boards in all its classes.

Mr Murgett said special funding from the education department as well as school fundraising had made the project possible. Earlier in the day Mr Clarke visited the University of Huddersfield on the invitation of the Vice Chancellor, Professor John Tarrant.

He met senior members of the university's management team to discuss its links with further education colleges, particularly those in Barnsley and Oldham.

University chiefs are looking at ways to improve take-up of higher education in these areas.

Head of public relations, Philip Williams, said: "The discussions were very positive, but obviously it's too early to talk about an outcome."
