DEWSBURY and Mirfield MP Shahid Malik said it was a ‘miracle’ his 71-year-old dad is still alive after a car crash.
The MP’s dad, Rafique Malik – former mayor of Burnley – was rushed to hospital last Thursday night after the motorway smash.
The pensioner fractured six ribs, punctured his lung and he suffered from internal bleeding.
Shahid drove from London to Fairfield hospital in Bury as soon as he heard the news.
When he arrived after a four-hour journey his dad was still being treated in casualty with his wife, Nasreen, by his side.
Mr Malik said: “We stayed the first two nights with him and are very pleased that his condition has now stabilised and he is slowly recovering.
“It’s been a very frightening episode for the family and we are relieved that fears about his neck being injured have subsided following a number of scans.Š
“We are extremely grateful and have taken great comfort from all the good wishes and prayers that have been sent and said for his speedy recovery.”
On Friday Mr Malik’s dad was joined by all seven of his children, with three of his other sons travelling from London.
He is now said to be in a stable condition.
The pensioner’s car was left with its wheels and rear axle broken off from the main body of the car.
Eye witnesses reported the car caught fire after the crash.
Mr Malik would like to extend his thanks to locals who sent messages of support.
