COUNCILLORS committed £368,000 to save a historic church building.

The Cabinet pledged the money yesterday to restore Wellhouse Farm Barn in Mirfield.

The derelict Grade 2 listed building – which is owned by the Moravian Church – is on the council’s Building at Risk register.

The Cabinet gave a grant of £140,000 and a loan of £228,000 to Kirklees Historic Buildings Trust.

The trust will use the money to buy the barn from the church for a nominal sum and develop it for housing.

Cabinet member for regeneration Clr Peter McBride (pictured) said: “This is the sensible thing to do. It will make the building safe and improve the environment.”
