AFTER 57 days rowing the Atlantic their arms are sore and their beards are long, but two rowers are on the home straight.

Mirfield firefighter Dean Jagger and colleague Neil Gyllenship are a little over 900 miles from completing their epic journey from La Gomera in the Canaries to Antigua, which started on January 6.

The race can take between 40 or 90 days to finish.

Father-of-three Dean, 40, and colleague Neil, 34, are based at Manchester Airport and are tackling the 3,000 mile endurance feat to raise more than £100,000 for children’s charities Claire House Children’s Hospice, St Ann’s Hospice and Childflight.

The pair, Team Heatwave, have survived on boil-in-the-bag food and sea water purified by an on-board pump, while being guided by satellite technology and keeping in contact with their families by satellite phone.

The rowers opt to go nude, not to soak up the mid-Atlantic rays, but because the salt content of the water is so high it can create nasty chaffing if damp clothes are worn.
