Parents have urged councillors to find the money now for a pelican crossing at a Mirfield danger spot.

Sarah Marshall, her daughter Eleanor and fellow parents of Mirfield Free Grammar School pleaded with Kirklees Council's Cabinet to improve the crossing facilities for school children.

A petition of 608 people was handed in to Kirklees Cabinet’s meeting yesterday.

She said: “Our residents and children deserve to have a safe place to cross this busy road.

“I plead to you to save a family from a potential tragedy and ask the council to be proactive rather than reactive. I understand there are budget needs, but not at the cost of a child’s life.”

Clr Steve Hall, Cabinet member for highways, said: “I use that road twice a day and there is always an idiot who needs to be somewhere yesterday.

“I’ve seen a plan for an island and it will have infrastructure to develop it in the future. We can’t wait to decide who is going to pay for it, if we have got the money now we will pay for it now.”
