MIRFIELD'S Rotary Club has been awarded an unusual honour - a classroom named after it.

The club raised more than £3,000 to help rebuild a school in Batticola, Sri Lanka, after the tsunami on Boxing Day 2004.

The club was presented with a bronze award for their efforts from Chris Garner, governor of District 1040, which covers West and North Yorkshire.

The club will have a room in the school named `Mirfield'.

The whole school has been paid for from £200,000 raised by Yorkshire Rotary clubs.

Former president Paul Cusworth said it was an honour. He said: "We raised money in a number of ways. We sent off much off the money quickly after the tsunami hit, to help in the immediate aftermath.

"But as aid began to flow into the country we decided to give £3,122 to the Rotary campaign. It just shows each little club can make a big difference when all our efforts are put together."
