AN HISTORIC pub is to reopen as a Tesco in less than two weeks – despite protests.

The former Black Bull building in Mirfield, which was built in 1755, is to reopen as a Tesco Express on January 20, creating 10 new jobs.

But action groups and residents have objected to the historic building being used as a Tesco and signs announcing the store’s opening have been vandalised.

Tesco, which owns approximately 30% of the UK supermarket share, won planning permission for various works and signage last month.

Six of Tesco’s applications – the shop front, canopy, gantry, plant yard, car park signs and satellite dish – were passed with majority support.

The supermarket giant was, however, refused permission for illuminated signs and a cash machine on the front of the building, on Huddersfield Road.

Tesco has agreed to use Yorkshire stone in alterations as a ‘gesture of goodwill’ after residents objected to the use of brick, which was agreed with the building's previous owners.

All of the store’s 10 new jobs have been filled. Staff will be transferred from other Tesco supermarkets for the other 15 posts.

Store manager, Matt Lawson, said there had been 73 applications for the 10 jobs.

Mr Lawson said: “I was thrilled by the response we received to our recruitment drive. In this time of economic uncertainty, it is great that we are able to create jobs for our local community and help get people back into work.

“I am really pleased with my new team and I’m looking forward to working with them. We are delighted to be opening a Tesco Express store on Huddersfield Road, Mirfield, and look forward to playing an active role in the local community.”

But Mirfield Councillor Martyn Bolt said he was yet to be convinced.

Clr Bolt said: “It’s a shame Tesco have gone about it in this way. They’ve alienated the populace by the lack of consultation.

“The traders are very fearful of their livelihood and there are still a lot of concerns.

“They’ve brought forward designs that are contrary to local planning policies, like the building should be kept in character with the rest of the village.”
