MIRFIELD’S jubilee celebrations have been saved at the eleventh hour.

The town’s planned jubilee event on Sunday had been cancelled due to licensing problems.

But Mirfield Town Council has stepped in to save the day and organise its own event.

The Diamond Jubilee Fete at Mirfield showground in Huddersfield Road from 11.30am to 4pm will be low-key but fun.

Local showman Howard Hardcastle has offered to loan rides, attractions and a stage and families are invited to turn up with their own picnics, barbecues, chairs, tables and gazebos.

The town’s jubilee oak will be formally planted at noon.

There will be various performances and demonstrations by local groups.

Mayor of Mirfield David Pinder said: “We wanted to prove that the town council can pull out the stops and put on a show.”
