COUNCIL officials have hit back at criticism of roadworks in Leeds Road, Mirfield.
Residents and drivers complained about long queues on the A62 and Sunny Bank Road because of a survey.
But Kirklees Council said it had responded to concerns and asked contractors to deal with the problems.
Clr Martyn Bolt, who raised issues on behalf of residents, said: “They were doing a survey in advance of the Mirfield 25 development but why it had to be done on a working day is beyond me.
“Surely the work could have been done on a weekend or overnight.”
A Kirklees spokesman said: “The traffic management company agreed to a number of conditions that the council required of them before we would allow works to take place.
“Evening or weekend working is usually our preferred option, but these aren't available at the moment because the A62 has to be kept clear of works due to the overnight and weekend closures on the M62.
“The company agreed to these requirements, but reports came into the council that queues were building up.
“We immediately contacted the company and reminded them of the need for manual operation so that they could react to the build-up of traffic and reduce queuing.”
