IT'S been a big week for Mirfield-born star Sir Patrick Stewart.

The world-renowned thespian carried the Olympic torch through Croydon on Monday - and also took to the social network Twitter to post his first photo.

In a star-studded day for the flame, Sir Patrick, who played Capt Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek, boldly bore the torch in a school in Croydon, south London, at lunchtime.

Later in the afternoon it was carried around the All England Tennis Club at Wimbledon by Venus Williams and Andy Murray.

Then last night, the symbolic flame was taken into the homes of millions as EastEnder Billy Mitchell carries the torch through fictional Walford, E20.

Also carrying the torch was Doreen Lawrence, mother of murdered black teenager Stephen Lawrence. The campaigner took it to the learning centre she set up in her son’s memory in Deptford, south-east London.

It appears Sir Patrick, who celebrated his 72nd birthday earlier this month, has also taken to Twitter.

In a yet as unverified account, his first tweet read "Hi World" and he's taken the user name @SirPatStew.

The Shakespearean legend also used the social network to show his devotion to his hometown football club Huddersfield Town by linking his account to the club's website.
