AN ELDERLY man has been found safe and well after a huge search.

Police were joined by specialist search teams in a two-hour hunt for the missing 70-year-old.

He had wandered off from his home in Holmfirth in bitterly- cold conditions and there were fears for his safety.

But the man was found on the slip road leading to the M62 at Ainley Top. A motorway police patrol stopped the man.

The alarm was raised when the man, who is suffering from Alzheimer's disease and asthma, was discovered missing from his home in the Cliff area of Holmfirth.

Members of the Holme Valley Mountain Rescue Team were called out to join the police.

Team leader Peter Phillips said: "The man used to do a lot of walking in his younger days and we had a team out searching the fields and hillsides around his home.

"West Yorkshire Police brought in the helicopter with its thermal imaging camera but the man was found close to the motorway.

"Police returned him to his home."
