THREE people have been arrested after a car was driven the wrong way along the M1 motorway near Leeds and rammed a police car which tried to stop it.

Police said they first began pursuing the black Mitsubishi on Churwell Hill, Morley, when it made off at speed.

It then travelled on the wrong side of the A653 Dewsbury Road in the direction of Tingley before getting onto the M62 and then the M1.

West Yorkshire Police said the driver made three attempts to perform a U-turn before it stopped.

An 18-year-old man from Morley has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, theft of a motor vehicle, criminal damage, and for failing to appear at court.

Two women, aged 18 and 21, have also been arrested.
