AN A-LEVEL student has appeared in court charged with robbing shopkeeper Gurmail Singh two days before he was killed.

The 17-year-old has been remanded in custody for a further eight days following the hearing at Huddersfield Magistrates' Court today.

He is charged with carrying out a robbery with another unknown person at Cowcliffe Convenience Stores on Thursday, February 18.

They are alleged to have got away with a quantity of cigarettes from the Cowcliffe Hill Road shop.

The shop was raided again on Saturday, February 20, when Mr Singh died after being hit up to nine times with a weapon, probably a hammer.

The youth charged with the first robbery cannot be named for legal reasons.

Dressed in casual clothes, he spoke only to confirm his name, but sobbed repeatedly during today's 65-minute hearing.

Two 17-year-olds, one from Fartown and one from Sheepridge, were arrested on suspicion of murder and robbery this weekend.

They and a 20-year-old man from Crosland Moor who was also arrested remain in custody.

Two youths, aged 17 and 18, who were arrested last week have been released without charge.
