MORE than three-quarters of the average British worker's pay is earmarked for bills and living costs before it even hits their bank account, research has shown.

The average person takes home £1,389 each month, but about £1,093 of this is needed for direct debits, bills and food, leaving an average of just £74 a week spare, according to Combined Insurance.

A mortgage is the single biggest monthly commitment at £347, but repayments on loans and credit cards account for a further £216.

People spend an average of £215 on food and utility bills and council tax accounts for a further £156, withtravel costs adding up to £115.

They also spend an average of nearly £50 on the costs associated with education and child care.
