MONKEY Poet got Huddersfield Literature Festival off to a swinging start.

The poet, pictured, otherwise known as Matt Panesh, was at Cafe Ollo to launch the event.

He entertained with edgy, political verses at the taster event.

The main festival began with a launch party at The Zetland, Queensgate, last night.

The free entry event included literary-themed cocktails and a screening of the official Huddersfield Literature Festival film, which celebrates creative writing in the town.

Tickets are still available for the festival’s Saturday workshops from Huddersfield Library and www.litfest.org.uk

The festival runs from March 13 to 17 and includes contributions from local author Joanne Harris, League of Gentlemen co-creator Jeremy Dyson and author Kate Atkinson.
