MOUNDS of waste have been dumped along stretches of remote moorland road above Huddersfield.

Dozens of tyres, blue plastic barrels, a bed and mattress were left at two sites along Saddleworth Road, Scammonden, and New Hey Road near Outlane at the end of last week.

John Appleyard, 55, of Rastrick, said he was outraged by the action which had despoiled such a beautiful part of Kirklees.

He spotted the eyesore while driving to work one morning.

He said: "I saw this horrendous amount of junk.

"There must be at least 150 tyres and solid wheels."

The waste looked as though it came from a garage and that someone was clearly trying to avoid paying for its disposal.

Mr Appleyard said a huge van would have been needed to transport the rubbish to the top of Buckstones Moor.

"It must have been a seven-tonner, there must have been people on the back shoving this rubbish off while the driver kept going.

"You get this minority of toe-rags in the middle of the night who go out dumping all this stuff."

An enforcement manager from Kirklees Council's new fly-tipping action squad said the rubbish could be collected some time this week, depending on what was found.

"We'll be clearing it up as quickly as we can. The speed of that will depend on the danger."

Officers sifted through the waste yesterday morning trying to find clues as to who could have dumped it.

"We will be looking for evidence and we would want to prosecute," said a spokesman for the enforcement department.

Culprits can face fines of thousands of pounds if found guilty.

The enforcement team has one fly-tipping prosecution pending.
