A ROAD closed after a landslip is open again.

The northbound lane of Woodhead Road at Holme Moss was closed last November 27 after land slipped away from it, making the road unsafe.

Tonnes of soil across a 20-metre stretch fell away and work, which began this month, was expected to take six weeks.

But Kirklees Council workmen have made the road safe.

A highways department spokesman said they were pleased the works had been a success, but added that the road would be closely watched to make sure it remained safe.

He added: "We have used 450 tonnes of reinforced stone. That will protect the hillside and prevent any further moving and weathering during the winter months.

"Over the next three or four months the stone will be subject to a period of settlement. We will be constantly monitoring it.

"If we are happy with it once we get to spring and summer then we will do the kerbing, but we may decide we need to do further work."

At first it was thought the work could cost hundreds of thousands of pounds, but the actually cost was much lower. So far, the repairs have set Kirklees back £30,000.

But the cost could rise to £150, 000 if more works are needed.
