DETAILS have been unveiled of plans to improve children's and young people's facilities in Lepton.

The ideas for improvements to the Highgate Lane recreation area have been drawn up after complaints from residents about problems caused by bored youngsters.

The youngsters themselves - whose case was taken up by Wakefield MP David Hinchliffe - complained there was a lack of facilities in the village.

The plans will go to Kirklees Council once the Lepton Community Forum is formally constituted as a group.

The meeting to set up the forum will take place at 7.00 on Wednesday, August 22 at Lepton Methodist Church.

The move will then allow the group to make bids for cash for improvements for young and old to funding bodies such as the Community Fund and the new lotteries fund.

Kirklees Council has already agreed to create a play area, including a basketball court and a shelter, when funds are available.

Now, it is hoped to add a garden area, with picnic tables, an extended area for toddlers with new play equipment and a toddler cycle track. There could also be a kickball area.

In response to the complaints of vandalism, graffiti and rowdiness, Mr Hinchliffe, whose constituency includes the Kirkburton and Denby Dale wards, organised public meetings in a bid to solve the problems.

He has also held surgeries at schools to talk to young people and residents.
