THE hills will be alive with the sound of music this weekend with the 20th Marsden Jazz Festival.

From Friday night until Sunday, venues in the town will welcome some of the jazz world’s biggest names.

And they’ll appear alongside local school bands as part of the musical weekend.

It all starts at 8pm on Friday night with Kenny Ball and his Jazzmen at Marsden Mechanics Hall.

And while the music continues throughout the weekend, there’s more to the jazz festival than just music, with walks and church services.

The Legion All-Stars play at Royal British Legion on Friday at 8.30pm.

Start the day with a jazz walk at 10am on Saturday organised by the National Trust.

Then see Dave Brennan’s Jubilee Jazz Band, Joe’s Allison, The Gents and Guests and Blue Toots with Saturday’s fun ending at Marsden Mechanics at 11pm with Submotion Orchestra.

School bands playing over the weekend include the Shelley College Jazz Band and the Heckmondwike Grammar School Big Band.

On Sunday morning there will be a jazz morning service with Winston’s Pennine Jazz at the United Church, followed by the duck race at Mellor Bridge near St Bartholomew’s Church.

Organisers welcome the New York Brass Band to the streets of the town and the Marsden Silver Prize Band, followed by the finale of the weekend at Marsden Mechanics at 4pm on Sunday, with the MJF All Stars Spectacular.
