MORE people are complimenting the West Yorkshire fire brigade and fewer are complaining.

In the 11 months to the end of February, fire chiefs received 339 compliments compared to 314 for the same period the previous year.

The number of complaints fell from 70 to 44.

Clr David Ridgway, who chairs the Fire Authority, welcomed the news.

“It’s encouraging to note that the majority of compliments reflect the excellent work we do directly with the public either at incidents or in the community.”

Of the compliments, 68 were linked to firefighting, 105 to community fire safety work and 33 to school visits.

An additional 16 compliments were accompanied by donations to the Fire Fighters’ Charity, totalling £1,089.

Of the 44 complaints received, 25 were not upheld.

Most were resolved early to the complainant’s satisfaction.

“National research shows that fire is one of the most highly-respected and highly-valued public services and I think these figures rightly underline that perception locally,” added Clr Ridgway.
