MORE roadworks are looming for a busy Huddersfield road.

And that is likely to mean more misery for residents, drivers and traders.

Kirklees Council has confirmed it is to start major resurfacing work on a stretch of Halifax Road in Birchencliffe on July 15.

The scheme will last for at least three weeks, and although much of the work will be done at weekends there will be traffic lights and diversions.

Traders in the area are already angered over long-running roadworks by Yorkshire Water, which they claim cost them business. They have applied for compensation but have not been successful.

In 2009 the inbound stretch of Halifax Road was closed off for four months while United Utilities carried out major gas works.

The latest work on the A629 Halifax Road will see it resurfaced between Birchencliffe Hill Road and Yew Tree Road. It follows on from the recently completed works undertaken by Yorkshire Water to prevent flooding at this location, replacing of the old gas main, upgrading of the pedestrian crossing and replacing the pedestrian islands to help local people cross the busy road.

Weather permitting, the resurfacing work is expected to be completed by the early August.

A Kirklees Council spokesman said: “The aim is to minimise disruption whilst work takes place on this important route to the M62 and the council has been discussing the scheme with businesses, residents and others affected about how disturbance can be limited.

“Resurfacing will mainly take place at weekends although some preparatory works will be undertaken during weekdays at off peak times when the road is a little quieter.

“There will be temporary traffic lights where two-way traffic will be maintained, or the one-way system as previously used when the gas pipes were replaced in 2009).“Alternative routes will be signed”.

The A629 will become one way towards Ainley Top between Birchencliffe Hill Road and Ainley Top roundabout on the Sundays of July 15, 22 and 29. Traffic travelling from the M62 towards Huddersfield will be diverted via the A643 Lindley Moor Road, A640 New Hey Road, A640 Westbourne Road, A640 Trinity Street, A62 Castlegate, A629 New North Road, A629 Edgerton/ Halifax Road.

Traffic from Halifax will be diverted via the A643 Brighouse Road, A643 New Hey Road, A6107 Clough Lane, A6107 Fixby Road, A641 Bradford Road, A641 Northgate, A62 Castlegate, Castlegate Loop, Fitzwilliam Street, A629 New North Road, A629 Edgerton / Halifax Road.
