DRIVERS can look forward to four weeks of hold-ups on one of Huddersfield’s busiest roads.
Changes have been made to the traffic management system for major roadworks at the Leeds Road/Hillhouse Lane junction.
Engineers had hoped to keep both inbound and outbound lanes of Leeds Road open throughout the works but yesterday confirmed one of the two lanes will have to shut.
It meant long queues for drivers yesterday and worse are expected when schools go back next week and traffic increases.
The work is taking place on the A62 Leeds Road at its junction with Hillhouse Lane and Thistle Street.
For approximately four weeks, the A62 will have at least one lane closed at all times.
This is in addition to the right turn lane closure from A62 Leeds Road into Hillhouse Lane that is currently in place.
Traffic signals will be adjusted so that disruption can be minimised.
A Kirklees Council spokesman said: “Some disruption is expected and motorists are advised to allow extra time for their journeys.
“The works are to improve traffic signals and pedestrian crossing facilities at the junction with Hillhouse Lane and Thistle Street”.
The traffic signals are being fitted with new equipment which responds to traffic flows and manages vehicle queues. The layout of the junction is being changed on all approaches.
The scheme will also provide red and green man crossing facilities for pedestrians as part of the planning conditions for the Travelodge and Costa Coffee development behind the Yorkshire Rose public house.
The 10-week improvement scheme is scheduled to finish in late November.
