Motorists and businesses in Huddersfield are being warned of up to a month of delays because of resurfacing work.

Kirklees Council is to carry out major road improvements around Chapel Hill and at Lockwood Bar.

The works coincide with the opening of the new Kirklees College at the Waterfront Quarter off Chapel Hill which will bring 20,000 full-time students to that part of town.

The new term starts on Wednesday.

Council highways chiefs are planning to start on “essential” road surfacing works at Lockwood Bar on Monday but crews will only work at night to minimise disruption.

Works will take place from 7pm to 11pm and include the junction of the A616 Lockwood Road/Swan Lane/B6108 Meltham Road, extending along the A616 Bridge Street over the river bridge past Lockwood Scar to join Woodhead Road to the point where it was resurfaced last year.

The route is likely to be part of that followed by the Tour de France, which comes to Huddersfield in July next year.

The Grand Depart is coming to Yorkshire and Kirklees Council has said it will bring forward planned road improvements to ensure smooth passage for the world’s best cyclists.

A council spokesman said: “Traffic restrictions including temporary traffic signals and some road closures will be in place, and although the roads will be quieter, there will inevitably be some delays and disruption during the three-week project and road users are asked to find alternative routes if possible.”

Works at Chapel Hill will mean temporary closures or one-way restrictions in Folly Hall, Colne Road, Milford Street and Chapel Street.

The restrictions will happen from September 9 and could last for up to four weeks.

The restrictions will only be in force Mondays to Thursdays 7pm to 11pm.

The planned closures and diversions at Lockwood are as follows: Swan Lane from September 2 to 6 and then September 16 to 20 at its junction with the A616 Lockwood Road/B6108 Meltham Road.

The diversion is the unaffected length of Swan Lane, Park Road, Blackmoorfoot Road, Balmoral Avenue, Butternab Road, Meltham Road and vice versa.

Albert Street from September 2 to 6, September 9 to 11, and September 16 to 20 at its junction with the A616 Bridge Street.
