MOTORISTS could be given the chance to scratch and win free parking.

Council officials have come up with a novel plan to boost the number of drivers visiting an under-used car park.

Kirklees Council plans to set aside 250 spaces at Cliffe Street Car Park in Dewsbury for the scheme. Customers who spend more than £5 at certain town centre shops will be given a scratchcard. If they win, they will receive three hours’ free parking at Cliffe Street on their next visit.

The council’s Cabinet will decide whether to go ahead with the plan on Tuesday (March 31).

Kirklees officials estimate it will cost between £3,000 and £4,000 to produce 20,000 scratchcards. The council would also have to spend between £3,000 and £5,000 on new signs at the car park and posters to advertise the scheme.

Cabinet member for highways Clr David Sheard wants to increase the number of motorists using Cliffe Street.

He said: “The car park’s occupancy rate is very low. Most days it’s only 25% full – even on market days it’s only 50%. We want to bring people back to town.
